Forward the 600, Alphas

 Gould Forward the 600, Alphas

- A poem written by Cathy Gould, an Alpha from Pennsylvania

It started out on Capitol Hill fighting for access to care

Alphas were driving, flying we were coming from everywhere.

We were asking our congress and senate to co-sponsor HR 460

A major effort was put forth to celebrate our fifty.

With joy and hope in our hearts we fought for what was right

Everyone from everywhere would soon know our plight.

To work together this is a must in order to move forward and gain the trust of researchers, politicians and medical personnel

Let them know that we don't intend to fail

It was fifty years ago that Alpha 1 was discovered by Laurel

And Erikson we can thank no other

Our National Conference was later in the week

We were here to celebrate for conquering such a feat

John Walsh, our founder was around giving support

25 years of dedication and knowledge was his retort

The "Alpha kids" were there so full of vim and vigor

Hope is on the horizon when dealing with the liver

Alphas throughout the world had a voice

to beat this disorder we have no other choice

Learn all we can from each other and our Alpha Docs

So we can share our knowledge with the rest of the flock

We can be a support group leader an advocate or a peer guide

Yearning to strengthen our unity we must learn to abide

The pharmaceuticals were here with smiles to share

Little gifts to remind us that they will always be there

A memoriam was held for all we had lost

Reminding us all that Alpha-1 has a cost

The association staff did a magnificent job

In planning the conference and containing this mob

We are 10,000 strong and we will fight to the end

To find a cure for Alpha-1 which is right around the bend

A cruise along the Potomac ended our stay

We wouldn't have had it any other way.
