Medicare open enrollment deadline is Monday

Monday, Dec. 7 is the deadline for Alphas to select, update, or renew their Medicare plan to ensure that their personal healthcare needs are met and they are not over or under-insured for the coming year.

Those who have not already assessed their needs since open enrollment began on Oct. 15 are advised to make sure that their current plan is best suited for their medical care as well as their prescription drug coverage.

Those who are happy with their plans do not need to do anything, as existing plans will automatically renew.

Some critical changes are taking place with Medicare that will affect the Alpha-1 community. The changes could affect an Alpha’s augmentation therapy infusions and other essential coverage.

Additionally, premiums will increase an average of 7.5 percent for the benchmark silver insurance plan next year in the 37 states that use the federal Obamacare exchange. Alphas are encouraged to shop around to find the best coverage plans to suit their needs.

Officials with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have unveiled a series of improvements that are designed to make this year's enrollment season faster and smoother.
