Alpha-1 Foundation earns highest not-for-profit accreditations

Alpha-1 Foundation earns highest not-for-profit accreditations

The Alpha-1 Foundation earned the 2019 Platinum Seal of Transparency, the highest level of recognition offered by GuideStar, the world’s largest database and source of nonprofit information, and received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the largest charity evaluator in the U.S., for the ninth consecutive year.

By sharing metrics that highlight the progress that the Alpha-1 Foundation is making toward its mission of finding a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) and improving the lives of those affected by the condition, worldwide, the Foundation is helping donors move beyond simplistic ways of nonprofit evaluation.

"According to our long-held belief in being transparent about our work, we are excited to share our organization’s results in a user-friendly and highly visual manner. By updating our GuideStar Nonprofit Profile to earn a Platinum Seal, we can now easily share a wealth of up-to-date organizational metrics with our supporters as well as GuideStar's immense online audience, which includes donors, grantmakers, our peers, and the media," said Miriam O’Day, president & CEO of the Alpha-1 Foundation.

“We are thrilled that our Platinum Seal of Transparency and the associated benefits will help us better communicate our organization’s exciting initiatives at a global scale, for the benefit of the community we serve,” she added.

To reach GuideStar’s Platinum Seal of Transparency, the Alpha-1 Foundation added extensive information to its GuideStar Nonprofit Profile: basic contact and organizational information; in-depth financial information; qualitative information about goals, strategies, and capabilities; and quantitative information about results and progress toward its mission.

By taking the time to provide this information, the Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to transparency and to giving donors and funders meaningful data to evaluate nonprofit performance.

Also, the Foundation earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the ninth consecutive year. This top score is based on the evaluation of its program expenses, administrative expenses and fundraising expenses, transparency of operations and fundraising efficiency.

Charity Navigator is the nation's largest independent charity evaluator and leading donor advocate. It shares thoughts on emerging nonprofit-sector issues and offers tips to better inform the public about their giving decisions.
“The Foundation is honored to have received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, for the ninth consecutive year. Only 3 percent of charitable organizations have received this 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for nine consecutive years,” expressed O’Day.

“It is important that our donors and the Alpha-1 community in general trust that we are using their donations wisely to accomplish our mission of finding a cure for Alpha-1, and our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates our good governance and financial accountability to our supporters,” she added.

Charity Navigator’s evaluations are based on the financial information that each charity provides in its informational tax return, the IRS Form 990. With that information, they analyze each charity’s financial performance in seven key areas, which assess its financial efficiency and capacity, in relation to the charity’s cause area. Their final score of ‘Financial Health’ comes from combining a charity’s scores on a zero to ten scale for each of the seven-performance metrics.

The accountability and transparency are evaluated using two sources of information: the information provided by each organization on their IRS Form 990 and information collected from a review of the charity’s website. Charity Navigator uses that information to score the organization on seventeen different metrics, which assess whether the charity follows best practices of governance and ethics, and whether the charity makes it easy for donors to find critical information about the organization.

About Charity Navigator

Founded in 2001, Charity Navigator has become the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities. In their quest to help donors, their team of professional analysts has examined tens of thousands of non-profit financial documents. They have used this knowledge to develop an unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system to assess over 9,000 of America's best-known and some lesser known, but worthy, charities.

About Charity Navigator’s rating system

Charity Navigator's rating system examines two broad areas of a charity's performance; their Financial Health and their Accountability & Transparency. Their ratings show givers how efficiently they believe a charity will use their support today, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time and their level of commitment to good governance, best practices and openness with information. In the not-too-distant future, they plan to also rate charities’ reporting of their results. They provide these ratings so that charitable givers/social investors can make intelligent giving decisions, and so that the nonprofit sector can improve its performance.
