Advocacy Toolkit

When contacting your representative in Congress, it is important to convey the following two messages:

  • Your personal experience with Alpha-1 and,
  • How the issue being discussed affects individuals throughout the member's district, state or the entire country.

Many people neglect to contact their senators or representative because they are confused by the legislative process or they think that their legislator is not interested in what they have to say. Remember, however, that as a result of an election, it is your legislators’ responsibility to represent you. They do care about your opinions and concerns, and they will take action, if you ask.

Here are some “don'ts” that you should keep in mind when contacting your Senator or Representative:

  • Don’t mention to the legislator that you are a voter. They are already aware of that information.
  • Don’t threaten the legislator by saying that you will vote against them or for them if they choose to support your position or not.
  • Don’t overstate your facts. Be certain that the data you are using is accurate.
  • Don’t question the motives of the legislator, as this can only turn them off immediately.
