Each year, Support Groups contact their governor to declare May as Alpha-1 Awareness Month. This is also an opportunity for the support group members to each contact local media outlets in their hometowns and create awareness for Alpha-1. This forum is used to educate governors and other local elected officials about issues important to Alphas, such as Medicaid issues, genetic discrimination concerns, local smoking bans, clean air initiatives in your community, etc.
Support Group Leaders coordinate efforts within each state so that the Governors office is receiving one request from the Alpha-1 Community. Proclamations are displayed each year at the Annual National Education Conference.
