New Treatments for Alpha 1 -
What do Alphas want?
The Food and Drug Administration will be making decisions that affect life for decades to come.
They are asking for your opinion NOW.
FDA Vote
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in charge of approving all new treatments for Alpha-1. It is a very complex and important process. They have enormous power and responsibility and want to add the patient perspective to their decisions. They want to hear from you!

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Act now!

How can my opinion make a difference?plus

When a company wants to create a new medicine, they have to run their own tests to prove it works and is safe. The FDA reviews the plans and company’s data and decides whether to give the company permission to start testing the medicine on people - a “clinical trial.” If all goes well, and the medicine works, the FDA approves it. Then the company can start providing the medicine.

Normally, the FDA spends all their time listening to doctors and scientists and reviewing mountains of data. The scientists spend a lot of time talking about how safe a treatment must be before patients are allowed to use it. Some argue that patients with serious diseases should be allowed to take any treatments that work for them – even treatments with some safety problems. The FDA found it is getting harder and harder to decide when a treatment is better than the disease. They have decided it is time to ASK THE PATIENTS.

This is where you come in. You have an opportunity to tell the FDA about what you think. What do you think about the current Alpha-1 treatments? What do you want to see in the future? What issues will YOU tolerate in order to live a better life with Alpha-1? What risks are you willing to take? What risks are you not willing to take? Most importantly, you have the chance to tell the FDA how having Alpha-1 impacts your life and the lives of your loved ones.

If the FDA approves new treatments, patients and their doctors will have more options. Nobody will be forced to take any treatment, but once a new treatment is approved, you can make your own decisions about whether you want to try it. If a treatment is not approved, nobody is allowed to use it.

This is a chance for you to tell the FDA.

This is the first time in history that the Food and Drug Administration has asked patients to come share their opinions – Tell them yours. It matters..
